The local village, Mengham, is a short walk from Woods Cottage and boasts a wide range of independent shops including an excellent butchers, fish mongers, bakers, cafes/restaurant and delicatessen as well as high street banks (Lloyds, Natwest and Barclays) and pharmacies. Further to the West of Mengham is the village of West Town with further restaurants, an extensive angling shop, Tesco metro etc

A five mile long beach runs along the Southern edge of Hayling with views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, perfect for bracing walks or bucket and spade sand castle building! There is a miniature railway (The East Hayling Light Railway) that runs along a two mile stretch of the seafront. For those who love bicycling, it is possible to cycle to the western tip of Hayling, catch the ferry across to Southsea and ride all the way along Portsmouth seafront ending up in picturesque Old Portsmouth.

There are numerous areas on the Island for walks including the Hayling Billy Trail along the Island's Western seaboard which traces the route of the old railway line.
